S express proves V10 into A8 does go

Formula One racers won't use V10 engines next year, but Audi's new S8 will - and in some style. The £67,000 executive express features a 5.2-litre version of the powerplant fitted to Lamborghini's Gallardo supercar.

18th October 2005

With 450bhp and 540Nm of torque on tap, it covers 0-60mph in less than five seconds and hits a limited top speed of 155mph. A quattro 4WD system, capable of sending up to 85 per cent of the power to the rear, is standard-fit, as is a six-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox with steering wheel paddles.

In addition, the S8 gets adaptive air-suspension - 20mm lower than normal - and huge 18-inch brakes. The luxury cabin offers sound-insulating double glazing and DVD sat-nav, with a 1,100-watt stereo optional.

The hottest A8 has stunning looks to match its pace, with subtle honeycomb front and side air intakes, unique 20-inch alloys and quad tailpipes. Sales are set to start early next year.
