The device (similar to the timepiece on the right), includes a microchip to track the wearer's movements. It picks up signals used by sat-nav systems, and transmits back to officials if the offender has travelled to places where alcohol is served. Probation services in Palm Springs, California, have approved the first tests, and are monitoring 10 convicted drink-drivers who are banned from bars and clubs.
"It is the smallest tag of its kind," said a probation service spokesman. "Most are bigger and normally fitted to the ankle."
