'Miss' system's a hit

A vehicle capable of spotting pedestrians in the road to avoid hitting them is undergoing testing.

24th January 2006

The Save-U system was developed by firms including VW and Daimler-Chrysler. Pedestrian-recognition technology uses radar sensors plus cameras to either alert the driver or take its own action. This means applying the brakes or activating safety features. Designers admit they will have to shrink the sensors before fitting them into cars.
