Insurance disks could prevent fraud

Two out of three drivers want to see the introduction of mandatory insurance disks on cars to help the police identify and stop uninsured drivers.

The study by Tesco, reveals the overwhelming majority of drivers (66%) see this as the most effective way to expose the estimated one million uninsured drivers currently on our roads.

The system of displaying an insurance disk is currently a legal requirement in Italy, Ireland and France allowing police to easily target those without valid insurance.

It is estimated that uninsured drivers cost other motorists and average of £30 in higher insurance premiums.

A Tesco spoksman said: "While recent changes to the Road Safety Bill give the authorities more power to fine or even confiscate the cars of uninsured drivers, motorists are telling us that more needs to be done to actually identify these drivers on the road."
