Bastuck had got out of his car to change a wheel on his Citroen C2 after driver Aaron Burkart went off the road. In a tragic coincidence, he was then hit by the Ford Fiesta of Britons Barry Clark and Scott Martin, who crashed at the same corner minutes after the German pair.

Bastuck was seriously injured and flown to hospital, but rally organisers later announced he had died from his injuries.

All celebrations were immediately cancelled for the race finish on Sunday, but it was decided that the rally would be
completed.

The tragedy comes six months after the last fatality, when Michael Park, Markko Martin's co-driver, was killed instantly in a high-speed accident on the Rally Great Britain. Before these two accidents the WRC had not seen a competitor fatality for over a decade.
