Brits' £63bn on new cars

Big-spending Brits will splash out £63billion on motors in the next six months. That's according to Sainsbury's Bank, which says 7.85 million UK drivers plan to buy a car between March and August this year - 2.45m more than in the same period in 2005.

As our graphic (right) shows, the south-west of England is seeing the greatest rise in buying intent, with eight per cent more people planning to spend cash on vehicles in 2006. The second-largest increase is five per cent - in Scotland - while there are four per cent fewer potential buyers in the north of England this year.

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: "In the first two months of 2006, new car sales were reportedly down, but our findings show more people now plan to buy, which is great for the industry."
