SUVs - not so bad after all?

After years of adverse publicity, a car industry body claims that SUVs and 4x4s may not be as environmentally unsound as they are portrayed.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published figures showing that despite an annual increase in sales of 4x4 vehicles of over 50 percent, total CO2 emissions from them have fallen 17 percent.

The SMMT also points out that while 4x4 sales have been rocketing, accident figures across the whole car market have been falling quickly - injuries and fatalities are down around 17 percent for both passengers and pedestrians.

While this doesn't imply that off-roaders are actully responsible for the improvement, it does show that they haven't triggered a nationwide frenzy of fatalities either, whatever their poor public image.
