COMPLAINTS about used cars had phones ringing off their hooks last year! They were the second most common cause of calls received by the Consumer Direct helpline. The advice service took more than 31,000 enquiries about used motors in 2005 - eight per cent of the total number received. And it's not only buying cars that is fraught with difficulties, because repairs and servicing also accounted for 13,000 complaints. The industry has been warned to clean up its act by the National Consumer Council.
PRIVATE buyers beware; there's every chance your next used car won't be road legal when you take delivery. More than two million motorists regularly break the law by driving illegal vehicles, and 94 per cent are unaware anything is wrong! The most common problems, according to the Direct Line survey, are broken lights (image) and cracked mirrors.
