Power struggle pushes the limits

The race to have the most powerful car in the world has raised the total horsepower standard by more than 300bhp in two-and-a-half years.

In October 2003, the 660bhp Ferrari Enzo was the most powerful supercar available - today it's the 987bhp Bugatti Veyron.

And the Ferrari has been shoved down to fifth, having to make way for newcomers such as Sweden's Koenigsegg and US firm Saleen. Even the 611bhp Ferrari 599GTB can't make the top 10, as any newcomer to the power league now needs to boast at least 613bhp.
