Next 9-5 is quick on the draw

It's a bit sketchy at the moment, but in this week's issue we take an early look at Saab's new 9-5. This image was shown at the opening of General Motors' new design centre in Russelsheim, Germany, and shows how the Swedish firm's next flagship will take on a stunning sporty style.

Presented by Bryan Nesbitt, executive director of GM Design Europe, the model draws its inspiration from the Aero X concept first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

Unlike the existing 9-5 saloon, the replacement has a rising waistline and a hatchback rear. It will be marketed as an executive model for buyers who want to stand out from the crowd.

With captions that highlight the model's grille, which is influenced by Saab fighter planes, and a distinctive wraparound windscreen, the sketch demonstrates the aviation theme that will spread across the Saab range.

Designer Anthony Lo told us: "A crossover SUV will arrive first, followed by the 9-5. Both cars will be inspired by the Aero X." The crossover model, badged 9-2, will go on sale in the first half of next year, with the larger machine due by the end of 2007. The firm's new face will appear again in 2008, when Saab's Audi TT-rivalling coupé and roadster will be launched.
