Car hire renters Sixt have published the list to help its customers avoid the worst delays. UK sales head Beverley Oliver says they don't want to see renters "spending hours in lengthy traffic jams instead of enjoying the time away from work".

Drivers are advised to avoid the following areas at the peak holiday times - 6pm to 9pm Friday and 4pm to 8pm Monday:

1. M25 both ways J10 to J16
2. M25 Clockwise J23 to J31
3. M1 Northbound J6a to J9
4. M1 northbound J21 - J28
5. M6 northbound J15 - J20
6. M6 Southbound J11 - J8
7. M5 Southbound J14 - J20
8. M4 westbound J23A - J30
9. M6 northbound J29 to J32
10. M6 Northbound J4a to J10a

Regular travellers will not find many of these too surprising, but with internet mapping and sat-nav, motorists should be able to work out alternative routes to save themselves some grief.
