Unlike its boxy predecessor, the newcomer has stylish looks, a flexible cabin and offers a sporty driving experience. On sale in 2008, it promises to reverse the current model's unpopularity. Ford sold less than 12,000 Fusions last year, while key rival the Honda Jazz found 28,000 homes. And the blue oval knows that it needs something good to tempt buyers away from the new Nissan Note and Skoda Roomster.
That's why Ford has really pulled out all the stops with the B-MAX. Drawing inspiration from its larger brother, the S-MAX, it features a similar grille and bumper arrangement along with an angled C-pillar and tail-lights. The look is enhanced by a steeply curved roof and chunky wheelarches.
Based on similar underpinnings to the next-generation Fiesta, which we exclusively revealed in Issue 900, the B-MAX will be bigger than the Fusion thanks to a longer wheelbase. One of the most spacious models in its class, it promises lots of flexibility.
Inside, there will be a five-seater layout. Each of the rear chairs will slide fore and aft, as with the bigger S-MAX, increasing room for passengers or boot space according to the owners' needs. The arrangement folds flat to create a level load area, while the boot will have a useful hidden under-floor compartment for stowing valuables.
Access to the back seats will be enhanced thanks to Mazda RX-8-style reverse-hinged rear doors, while the tall ride height should make getting into and out of the car easier than with a normal supermini.
At the front, the driver will be treated to a stylish dashboard - again inspired by the S-MAX - with classy chrome trim and soft-touch plastics.
The driving experience promises to be sharp, too. Despite its MPV looks, the B-MAX will have direct steering and minimal body roll, while still offering a compliant and comfortable ride.
And to boost driver appeal further, there will be a range of lively engines from the next Fiesta, including 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol and turbodiesel powerplants. The B-MAX is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year and scheduled to arrive at UK dealers in early 2008, priced from around £11,000.
