Don’t panic – this black Mercedes S-Class isn’t a dodgy DIY limo!

The stretched saloon might look a bit crooked, but it’s actually a test mule for the next-generation Maybach. Our spies caught engineers putting this early prototype through its paces, proving that Mercedes isn’t about to give up on its luxurious flagship brand.

Our other picture shows how the all-new model is expected to look, with a more distinctive appearance than ever before. Company bosses are keen to differentiate all future models, after criticism that the previous generation was too similar to Mercedes’ own cars.

That explains the saloon’s prominent grille and sleek headlamps. However, the current Maybach is far from past it, judging by recent exploits. The Brabus 57 was recorded at 205.4mph on the high-speed bowl at the Nardo test facility in Italy.
