Heavy plastic cladding disguises new X1

At first glance, these spy shots might look as if they show a heavily disguised X3 – but in reality, the pictures are of the German giant’s smallest off-roader, the X1.
The firm recently gave the model the green light for production, and also confirmed its sister SUV, the MINI Monte, would hit showrooms. Our spies spotted the first BMW prototype being tested near to the company’s home in Germany.
Based on the 1-Series hatchback, the newcomer is BMW’s latest attempt to expand its range, and goes on sale in 2010. It will rival other compact off-roaders such as Ford’s forthcoming Kuga and the Toyota RAV4.
Under the skin, the X1 shares its platform, electronic four-wheel drive and raised suspension with the Monte. The BMW is likely to be slightly larger, though, and similar in size to the Kuga.
The styling is inspired by the X5 SUV, with a bold grille and a rising waistline. The newcomer will also have a chunky stance and large wheels which will fill the massive arches of this prototype.
However, in a bid to differentiate the X1 from bigger models, it will have a steeply sloping tailgate. Inside, there is room for five and it shares much with the 1-Series, although there will be a revised version of BMW’s iDrive cabin control system.
Engines will also come from the 1-Series line-up, with the range topped by a 305bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol unit. All cars will feature BMW’s Efficient Dynamics system, which adds stop-start technology and an energy-saving alternator to cut fuel consumption and emissions. Prices will start at just over £20,000.
