Don’t be fooled by this mule’s A8 bodywork, though, because underneath is a rakish four-door coupé to rival the Mercedes CLS.
Taking design cues from the R8 supercar as well as the latest A8, the newcomer will have a low roof, high waistline and bulging wheel-arches to give it real presence. Further visual enhancements will include LED headlamps and pillarless doors, while a stylish cabin is promised.
Expected to be based on the A6, the A7 will have a wide choice of drivetrains. Petrol engines will include 3.0-litre and 4.2-litre units, while diesel fans can choose the 2.7-litre TDI or 4.2-litre V8 oil-burner. Top of the range is likely to be an S7 badged version with a 429bhp 5.2-litre V10. All engines will be available with quattro four-wheel drive and a DSG sequential gearbox. The first UK examples will arrive early in 2009, priced just below the A8 saloon.
