Only a couple of weeks after we spotted a facelifted 3-Series being readied for production, these pictures prove that the German firm are also hard at work on an all new version of the compact saloon.

A generous helping of camouflage makes it difficult to gleam any particulars about the styling but reports suggest that the new car will have a sportier overall appearance, featuring a larger grille and re-designed lights.

These shots also confirm that the new model has grown in all directions, looking noticeably longer and wider than the car it replaces.

An important introduction to the range will be an EfficientDynamics model, powered by a small 3-cylinder engine paired with a range-extending electric motor. Other 'green' tweaks will include low resistance tyres, active aerodynamics, stop-start and a regenerative braking system.
