The Peugeot Expert Tepee is the firm's largest MPV and its rivals include the Hyundai i800 and VW Caravelle. Its van-like looks may not be to everyone's tastes, but it does offer sliding doors and and a very flexible interior. It's available in two lengths - the short version has six seats in two rows of three, while the long version can seat nine. These seats are adjustable, foldable and removable, too. The Expert Tepee doesn't get very much equipment and there's just one engine, but it is very good value.

Engines, performance and drive

There's just one diesel engine available, but it does come in three power outputs. The 2.0-litre HDi diesel cis available with 97bhp, 128bhp and 161bhp. The lowest powered version has a 0-62mph time of 18.5 seconds (or 20.7 seconds for the nine-seat version. The most powerful version can manage the 0-62mph sprint in a much more respectable time of 12 seconds and has a top speed of 106mph. All come fitted with a six-speed manual as standard, bar the most powerful version which comes with a six-speed automatic with a manual mode. The ride is comfortable and it handles potholes fairly well, but the handling and steering leave a lot to be desired.

MPG, CO2 and Running Costs

While the Expert Tepee lacks in pace, it does make up for it with decent fuel economy. The most efficient version of the Expert Tepee is the 128bhp model, which is capable of returning fuel consumption of 43mpg and CO2 emissions of 172g/km. The most powerful version manages 37mpg and 199g/km of CO2. Car tax isn't cheap, then, but servicing costs should be reasonable, thanks to Peugeot's range of fixed-price offers.

Interior, design and technology

The Expert Tepee is based on a commercial van, and that's clear from the styling. And things aren't much better on the inside, with a high-set gearstick and very little kit. The fit and finish isn't great either, especially when compared to rivals like the Renault Espace and VW Caravelle. There are two trim levels: Comfort and Leisure. Entry-level cars get air-con, front electric windows and a multi-function steering wheel, while top-of-the-range Leisure cars come with front fog lights and heated door mirrors. Optional extras include tinted rear windows for around £130, while automatic lights and wipers cost around £230 and 16-inch alloys are an extra £500.

Practicality, comfort and boot space

The six-seat Expert Tepee has 1,068 litres of luggage space, and 2,163 litres with the rear seats down. The nine-seat version has a 1,400 litre boot and a maximum capacity of 2,814 litres. The rear seats split, fold and tumble, or they can be removed entirely to transform the MPV into a van. Plus, loading is easy thanks to the flat floor and high roof. There's lots of storage space around the cabin, too, including a big glove box and overhead storage, while the twin sliding door and rear tailgate provide great access even when parked in tight car parks.

Reliability and Safety

The Expert Tepee hasn't been crash tested by Euro NCAP. Standard safety kit depends on which trim level you go for, but entry-level cars get ABS, brake assist and a driver's airbag. ESP and traction control is a £570 option, while a passenger airbag will set you back almost £200. Peugeot finished a disappointing 28th overall out of 30 in the 2012 Driver Power reliability survey. And it has been the subject of a few recalls. That said, the diesel engine, gearboxes and electronics are widely used, which should help lower risk of problems.
