Ever since their launch a couple of years ago, we’ve been fans of Car Wash Wipes – now called Clean & Shine Wipes. They are a favourite of our road test team, and it’s easy to see why, as they lift dirt without damage and take no more effort than running a sponge over the car.

At 40p a go, the big wipes – made from stronger material than those for the interior – work out cheaper than spray-on cleaners, too. There’s no need for leathering, and they leave a decent shine with a water-repellent finish. An easy winner.

Miracle Drywash

A more conventional approach from Miracle, with a trigger pack that is sprayed on, wiped, then buffed to leave a highly water-repellent coating. Rivals can match its cleaning power, but not at the same price – each wash should set you back only around £1.50.

Turtle Wax No Hose Wash

Price £4.99

Yet another solution from Turtle Wax. Unlike most rivals in this sector, it does require water – although only a couple of buckets. First, you use the No Hose solution to sponge off grime. Then, rinse with clean water on a sponge and leather dry. Time consuming, but easy on the wallet.

What we looked for

With hosepipe bans becoming more common, big hitters such as Turtle Wax have joined the band of firms producing alternatives to regular washing. And there are several different ways of keeping your car clean without using gallons of water in what is still a relatively new sector.

We tried them all on grubby panels, windows and wheels, looking for simple grime shifting and, importantly, no paint damage. We factored in ease of use and cost, which can be quite high compared to a bucket of suds and a sponge.
