Our winner comes from the plus 50 per cent category, which refers to the amount of light produced 75 metres ahead of the car compared with a standard bulb. With one exception, these are the most powerful lamps on the market, and Halfords’ winning pair – which are made by General Electric – came out on top in a closely fought class with a great performance, delivering extra light exactly where the driver needed it.
Hella H4
Price £7.35
The no-frills Hella entry topped the standard bulb class with a performance that embarrassed a few premium products. Consistency was a little off, but the average result showed a clean pair of heels to the budget competition, where price is often more important than performance.

Halfords Brilliance
Price Price: £19.98
A second award in this category for the high-street motor store, this time for its plus 30 per cent contender. A switch to products supplied by Philips subsidiary Narva certainly did Halfords no harm, as the Brilliance came out on top thanks to an improved overall result.

Osram Cool Blue
Price £21.15
If you want a bulb that tries to emulate the blue tint of gas-discharge headlamps, Osram’s Cool Blue is the one to go for.
In the testing tunnel, its glow was whiter than that of conventional lamps, but light values were down, due to the glass’s blue coating.
