If any product could dethrone our champ, this was it – newcomer Williams’ performance came in right at the top. Its slightly higher price was offset by the thick gel format, which was harder to apply, but should go further. A worthy runner-up to our class winner.

What we looked for

When it comes to protection, bumper shines are the heavy mob. Two months into our test, the best were still beading water strongly.
Owners with painted bumpers may think they don’t need one, but there is still plenty of plastic that could do with a little protection, such as spoiler lips, wing-mirror mounts and wheelarch trim. We applied 19 products to a scrapped bumper and exposed it to the winter weather for more than eight weeks, regularly monitoring progress.
