Picnic Sets

For many of us, summer fun means days out in the car and eating al fresco. And of course, the best way to do it is to take your own food and creature comforts, such as plates, glasses and cutlery. You could simply raid the kitchen cupboards, but there’s nothing like a good picnic set to make dining outdoors as pain-free as possible.

Most are designed for two or four people and come in two styles – rucksack or wicker hamper. While there’s no doubting the appeal of a traditional hamper, the rucksack is becoming very popular, as it takes up less space and is easier to carry – essential unless you plan to eat in a car park! So which set is ideal for your outdoor experience? We emptied the fridge to find out.

Verdict

The sheer volume and number of accessories put the Hi Gear beyond reach of the rest, but the second and third-placed Eurohike and Proteam contenders were very evenly matched. Either would be ideally suited to the average family picnic.
