Halfords Foot Pump

Date: April 2007

Given the dismal accuracy of some rivals, you might think the lack of a gauge here was no loss. But it is a real fiddle connecting, disconnecting and checking when you have no clue how much air has gone in. Even at less than a fiver, we weren’t impressed: it was no more stable or easier to use than other single-barrel products. Cheap, certainly – but not really money well spent.

The 'value' £4.99 Halfords pump - broke easily

Having bought some footpumps from a well-known catalogue store and also local general stores and found they broke VERY easily after just one or two uses, I went to Halfords hoping for some quality. Halfords lasted the longest - 7 or 8 careful uses in 10 months. Then the plate weld between cylinder and pump frame just gave way and that was that. These pumps are not at all as strong as the pumps from the past - I had one from the 1980s that I gave away with my old car, I don't half wish I'd kept that old foot pump, I would if I had known how poor today's can be. Meanwhile, Halfords have not got back to me on this broken pump, so I will take my custom elsewhere in future and buy an electric pump ths time from another retailer - even the cheaper electric ones tend to last me at least 5 years,.
