Park-and-ride with a folding bike is a good idea for many commuters. Reduce your carbon footprint, cut the time and money spent on commuting and even get in shape by taking the 'folder' out of the boot and pedalling to work. We put the latest machines to the test to find our top buys.

The Test

Folding and riding are key elements of these machines. As long as they fit in a boot, folded size isn't critical, but simple assembly is, so we wanted a user-friendly machine. We also looked for easy pedalling and safe handling, plus extras such as racks and lights. Price played a relatively small part.

Verdict

Brompton's M2LX was the easiest to assemble; build was excellent and the ride comfortable. If travelling further, go for a Dahon Cadenza. Top budget buy is the Apollo Transition.
