We all think we’re great drivers, but how about becoming even better?

Advanced courses often have a dull image, but there is no better way to make you safer at the wheel. What’s more, with courses on both the road and the track, improving your car control can be lots of fun.
There are a number of options. You could go down the accredited route with one of the recognised bodies, such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) or Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). They will give you training and put you through a test. Or if you simply want to know how to control your car in extreme circumstances, you could pick a track-based event.
One thing to watch out for is the promise of an insurance discount – this is down to your provider, so ask what you’ll get first. And while you’re on the phone, check you can take lessons in the car. As every course we look at here demands students bring their own vehicle, you should make sure you have sufficient cover.
