Essential if you are going skiing, and a good idea in some parts of the UK, too. Snowchains are now much easier to fit than they once were as they use self-
adjusters – although you must get the right size for your tyres. Prices start at around £40, or you can rent or buy used chains. For lighter duties, check out mesh ‘socks’, which are easy to slip over the tyre, simple to store and cost around £70.
