Winter car-kit feature

February 2008

Tickets, passports, Euros, skis, snowboards – you might be ready for the pistes, but is your car? A winter ski break requires a bit more preparation than just turning up at the airport with shades and suntan oil, as you do on a summer holiday.

Given that the majority of the kit you need is bulky and potentially awkward to carry, it’s a good idea to purchase specialist gear. The other thing to consider is the condition of the roads. Over summer, resort roads may appear very similar to ones in the UK. In winter, however, an entirely different set of rules and requirements apply.

And finally...
Remember diesel can wax up and solidify when it gets really cold. In the UK, it stays liquid to -15ºC. But in winter resorts, the fuel has additives to extend this to -20ºC or lower, so fill up locally. Also, check with motoring organisations about what you are required or recommended to carry in specific countries.
