Matt rates: Snap-On and Facom

Tackle anything more advanced than a fluid top-up, and you’ll require a spanner. Matt uses combination and flat tools and says you need a range that covers at least 8-19mm. “Some come with a serrated open end to grip nuts better. And a long tool has better purchase. Cheaper products bend easily.”

Buyer’s guide: Look for a decent range of sizes, material quality, a keen price and a carry case.

Our pick: Laser 3732 (£36.07) from www.lasertools.co.uk
