A screwdriver won’t tackle every job under the bonnet – these days you’ll need hex, torx and spline drivers, too. Matt loves his Mac Tools set with its broad range. “A layout that holds the parts securely is worth paying for,” he explained. “The bits fall out of cheaper sets.”

Buyer’s guide: All common designs must be covered. A small ratchet is easy to work with, and a good case layout is useful.
