There aren’t many servicing jobs that don’t require a pair of pliers at some point. Whether it’s snipping or stripping wire, holding bolts or simply retrieving a dropped nut, a pair of pliers is the answer.
To cover all the bases, you need several tools, from sidecutters for cable through slim needlenose to hefty combination versions. Buying individually can be expensive, so why not go for a set? Watch out, though, as makers sometimes bundle smaller tools to keep costs down. Remember, the shorter the length of the pliers, the less leverage and grip available – and quality might be compromised, too. We put 10 sets to the test to find the best.
Combination and sidecut pliers had to cut through a welding rod 20 times; needle nose versions faced a bolt gripped in a vice. We checked all sets to see if they could grab paper, to ensure the jaws shut completely. Comfort and grip, smooth operation and inclusion of a case were noted. Prices were also considered.
Halfords surprised us with 10 terrific tools for less than £15, and took the top step on the podium and our Best Buy award.
Yamoto’s five-piece kit is professional grade and reasonable value with large tools, while Clarke’s PRO119 is a respectable budget solution and claimed third.
