Working on your car when holding a torch is like tackling it with one hand tied behind your back. To free up both hands, you need a head torch, which always shines just where you want it. There has never been a better time to slip one in your glovebox – the light emitting diode (LED) revolution has really got a grip, and several models now boast super-bright 1-Watt versions.
Makers are also working to overcome the increased power demands of the brighter LEDs by separating the torch and power pack in their designs for better balance and comfort. Others have sacrificed brightness for longevity by offering clever regulated outputs.
The technology has really moved on since our most recent test early last year – so which of these torches will put you ahead as the nights draw in?
we used a light meter to measure each torch’s output straight ahead and at two points to the side of the beam. They were weighed with batteries and their dimensions noted. Points were given for longer burn times, adjustable outputs and supplied batteries, while price was factored against performance.
It was tight at the top between the Ring Oculus and Princeton Tec EOS. Both are well designed and gave stunning levels of illumination from their 1-Watt LEDs. But a limited burn time and higher price ultimately cost the Eos. While the firm’s Apex is superb, it’s too pricey for everyday use.
