Maintaining your tyres at the correct pressure is key to maximising fuel economy and keeping tread wear to a minimum – but it’s often something
that can be overlooked.
While there are all manner of electric devices out there, the foot pump is a simple solution – especially if you’re stuck at the side of a road with a slow puncture. Although they need physical effort, they’re reliable and robust – so we tested 12 to find out which is best.
Pressures should always be checked with a proper gauge, but the one on the foot pump needs to be accurate to avoid wasted time and effort. We tested them all against a certified unit at three different pressure points, and also considered efficiency by seeing how much air was added for 30 pumps. Finally points were awarded for stability, build quality, hose length and a user-friendly valve connector, as well as price.
As soon as we took the Michelin units out of the box, we were impressed by their great finish and solid construction. Neither disappointed in the test, with superb accuracy and decent added pressure per pump. In the end, the double-barrel unit was relegated to second due to its higher price. Boasting the best accuracy and added pressure, the Sealey Pro Heavy Duty pump scored highly across the board – earning a credible third in this test, with the £25 asking price being its only problem.
