Brompton S2LX

Folding bikes tested

Price: £660

Brompton S2LX

Text: Graeme Lambert Date: April 2009

  • Rating:

We had high hopes for the Brompton, as its M2LX won our Issue 961 test. But the S2LX struggled against its more innovative rivals. While it was solid and easy to assemble, the harsh ride – despite the rear elastomer suspension – and limited two-speed drivetrain let it down here.

WE KEEP MAKING THE (FALSE) COMPARISON TO FULL-SIZE, EG HARDTAIL MTB

Uk is not well served for bike trails. One of the best traffic free I've tried with family was http://www.mawddachtrail.co.uk/
But to do it I needed to fix family's 4 hardtail MTB to car, drive Leeds to Snowdonia. Then off for night security/on again morning of Mawddach/off to ride it/on upon return/off at hotel etc etc.
A mate had read up on it and it seemed a folder was the way forward. But caution that with them built for 'medium folk' not 6'5" 15.5Stone Englishmen.
2 years on and he's hardly used it (Dahon I think), far too difficult to fold etc.
A folder still appeals to me, keep in boot for round the park. Take to france when loading up 4 full size = major effort.
The Dutch use a different method, aluminium trailer towed by car with luggage in it + box lid + cycle rack on it for 4 bikes.

The 3 best suited folders appear to be Brompton, Giant Subway, Carerra Transport.

So, they won't ever be as good as my lovely Giant Yukon 2009 hardtail front suspension MTB. So comfy and lovely it's part of me, we've done miles together.
But, it would get used:- park and ride, round the park then fold back into the boot. Zip round town. Towpath.

At the end of the day the MTB wont fit in my current car(well just) and I dont have roof bars or the sensible dutch trailer + cycle rack.

I'd like to borrow/hire a Brompton but will otherwise sit tight for another year.
