Using TomTom’s Live services used to mean buying one of the more expensive sat-navs in the Go range (our 2009 Product of the Year). But now, the package – which includes real-time traffic info and camera updates – is available on the budget-priced XL.
The XL Live is the first mass-market model from the Dutch firm to feature HD Traffic, up-to-the-minute camera updates, fuel prices and an online Google local search. IQ Route technology is also included – this calculates the most efficient way to get to your destination according to what time and day of the week you’re travelling.
In addition, the newcomer features maps of 42 European countries, although for now, the Live services are available only in the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands. A three-month Live subscription is included; after that, you pay £7.99 a month, although six-monthly or annual packs can be bought at a reduced rate. Owners of the Go x40 sat-nav series can also get a free update to use Live services in the above countries.
