Fitting a tracking device can not only help recover your car if it’s stolen, it could also cut the cost of insurance premiums in the first place. And the new TRAAKiT system can be DIY installed and self-monitored.

It’s a compact black box design, about the size of the palm of your hand, so fitting couldn’t be easier. But users need to think about exactly how it’s positioned in their car – we found signal quality intermittent, and the device had to be uncovered to transmit.

With the TRAAKiT placed in our glovebox, we completed a 30-mile-plus journey – but when we checked our progress on the website, it showed only five points on the route.

Still, when the kit is working properly, the Microsoft Live Maps it links to give a clear view of where your car has been.

You can set up a virtual fence, and if your vehicle goes outside this, you are sent a text message.

Battery life is reasonable, while we like the fact the TRAAKiT is so easy to remove and fit in another car.
