Tinkering under your bonnet can be one of the most relaxing ways to spend a weekend – unless you drop a screw!

Magnets can’t normally get into all the nooks and crannies of your engine bay, but the new Rolson Extendable Torch, from Maplin, could be the answer.

We deliberately dropped a tiny screw under the bonnet in our dark garage to test the device. Extending the metal was simple enough but, frustratingly, you have to screw the torch on the end by hand to switch it on.

An on/off switch next to the handle would have been better – but we could forgive this as the unit cost £3.99.

When we’d tracked down our rogue screw, it was easy enough to pick up. But the Rolson didn’t get on well with anything heavier.

 * Problems? Tricky to turn on and off, as there’s no light switch on the handle, metal can bend, magnet isn’t strong enough.

 * So why buy? Useful to have extendable torch, and the magnet had enough pulling power to pick up small screws dropped into the engine bay.
