If you’re unlucky enough to break down at night, you need to be able to see what you’re doing – so stash a torch in the glovebox.

Our current favourite is the neat LED Magnetic torch from Kamasa (£10.75).

It has a hook and magnet to free up your hands, and its 24 LEDs give a decent beam range. For a good-quality head torch, our current test champion is Ring’s RT5138, which costs £24.99.
