16. Spare fuel

30 money saving tips to get your car ready for winter

16. Spare fuel

Date: October 2009

When driving conditions are unpredictable, it’s a good idea not to let your fuel level drop below half-full.

If you ever become stranded, you can easily stay warm by keeping the engine running. If that is not practical, then carrying a can of spare fuel is always a sensible plan.

Jerry cans cost from just a few pounds, and come in a choice of metal or plastic finishes. Five or 10 litres is a handy size for the boot.

It is advisable NOT to carry spare fuel in loose cans in your car. By all means have a can to enable you to transport fuel if you fun out but DO NOT carry full cans in a car. Make sure you have enough fuel for your journey and if the weather starts getting bad fill up at the next filling station on your route to ensure you have enough if you get stranded. A mobile phone to call for help is a better item.
