With the New Year upon us, it's time to start planning for your winter break- but is your car fit for the pistes? Many models come with ski slots in the rear seats, yet few can cope with holiday luggage and passengers at the same time.
The solution is to make use of the roof, and ski carriers are often a better option than sports boxes costing hundreds of pounds. They are easier on the wallet, and storage is simple.
There are several designs available, but which is the one for your trip to the slopes?
We strapped on 10 to find out.
The Test
Ease of use is key here, as you want to spend as little time as possible loading up in freezing temperatures. So we looked for user-friendly designs which could be tackled while wearing gloves.
We also assessed security, plus the initial process of assembly and fitting to roof bars. Skis with large bindings can be a problem so we wanted to see a good clearance above the roof or the ability to adjust the height. Finally we took into account price.
Four pairs of skis will suffice on most trips so our winner is the cost effective Atera Nova 4. It looks good, plus worked well and has an excellent spec.
Fabbri's Aluski and Board Universale Deluxe can take two boards, as well as skis and hold them firmly in place.
In third, the Thule 726 can mix and match boards and skis. And if you've got six pairs of skis to pack then the Atera Nova 6 is well specified and worth considering.
