Data Loggers- g-tac free

g-tac free
Price: Free
Rating: 5/5

BEST BUY: As the name suggests, this is a pared-down free version of the full g-tac product – but it has a lot going for it. The software measures straight-line performance, giving figures from a standstill to 30, 60 and 100mph, 60ft, eighth and quarter mile times, plus g-force readings. It was fairly close to our road test gear, and at this price you can afford a little leeway in the results.

The other contenders:

CarTrak
Price: £2.39

We couldn’t get much out of this app, as a glitch meant we were unable to access detailed results. There’s a complex set-up procedure to go through when first using CarTrack, but once done, recording a run is simple. You can try several cars over a range of tests, including 0-60mph, quarter-mile and 0-100mph-0.

Dynolicious
Price £7.49

This tied with PocketDyno+ (below) as the costliest app we bought. You get more for your money than with the free software, though – it has detailed results and the option to share via E-mail or social networking sites. It’s easy to use and got closest to our data logger results, so it’s our paid-for choice.

PocketDyno+
Price: £7.49

Optimistic is the best way to describe the times from this app, which were sometimes a fair way off our road test kit. The traffic light start was easy to use and the results were clear, including a neat one which looks like a crumpled paper timing slip. As with Dynolicious, it calculates power output, which adds a dimension to the results.
