Looking to bag the best solution for carrying your car tools? Search no further than this test!
A flexible bag is often a better option than a rigid box, as soft handles mean it is usually more comfortable to lug around. Also, there are no sharp edges to scrape the trim in your car’s cabin or boot. Made from tough fabric, bags can outlast flimsier plastic boxes – and they are often cheaper, too.
As we discovered with our toolbox test, there is a wide range of designs – so we run the rule over 12 top-selling bags from accessory shops and online outlets to find the best buys.
The last thing you want during a breakdown is to be searching for the right tool. We looked for a way of keeping kit apart and easy to select.
We filled each contender with a selection of tools, plus a hacksaw, hammer and half-inch drive torque wrench. Bags with a sealed pocket, shoulder strap, solid base plus tough fastenings and seams scored points.
We preferred internal rather than external pockets, as there is less chance of tools getting lost. Finally, we looked for comfortable handles, good build quality and bags which could easily be stored in a boot. Price also played a part, but our figures don’t include delivery charges.
Finding an overall winner was not easy, as several bags had features we liked but then fell down in other areas. The best combination for us was the rugged Stanley FatMax Technician Bag, which was big enough to double as tool storage both for workshop and boot.
Halfords took second with its clever product that included a storage tray. Finally, Stanley got another product on the podium with its
innovative Tool Organizer, which was our ‘money no object’ choice.
