Don’t worry about costly sat-navs being stolen from your car – by keeping routing instructions in your pocket! There’s a range of clever apps for smartphones to make navigating easy. Simply download and hit the road. We test 12 of the best.
To cover the most common phone options, we tested the apps on a Blackberry 8900, Apple iPhone 4, HTC Desire HD and Nokia E7. Some software is offered on several platforms.Â
We searched for a point of interest (POI) and postcode, rating ease of use, then tested accuracy on the road. A deliberate wrong turn was made, to note recalculation times, plus we assessed the clarity of the instructions.Â
Apps with traffic alerts, street names and speed warnings scored, and we factored in the cost, including any subscriptions for extras.Â
Verdict
The best things in life are free! You can get excellent routing, accurate maps and a simple interface all for nothing with our Skobbler Best Buy – and it’s not exclusive to one make of mobile, either. Our favourite paid-for sat-nav is CoPilot Live 8. It’s accurate, plus feature-packed; you can play music, and get traffic and weather reports. Final step on the podium is occupied by WisePilot – a pay-as-you-go download that lets you opt for extra features.
