Apple music players have revolutionised in-car audio. The iPod, its spin-offs and online apps mean you no longer have to carry a bulky CD case. Auto makers have embraced the tech by fitting auxiliary and USB sockets in some new cars; with the right cables, you can control the iPod from the head unit. But what if you want that ability in an older model?
The latest aftermarket head units can help. Choose between the single-height (1DIN) units commonly found in older cars, and double-height (2DIN) stereos, which are popular in newer vehicles. We tried 12 of the best.
The Test
Compatibility with an iPod Classic and iPhone 3GS was crucial. We wanted our head units to charge the devices and select the music using the stereo controls. Album artwork was a neat cosmetic feature, and bonus points were awarded if there was the ability to play movie files.
A clear display and simple menus were a must, and we scored our units on compatibility with other media, looking for an aux-in port for non-Apple MP3 players and a CD slot. Finally, we factored in price, although you’ll be able to get a good deal if you shop around.
The single-height Parrot Asteroid scoops top spot with its large colour screen, simple connectivity and excellent bonus features – such as Android apps, Bluetooth and Voice Search. Motorists needing a double-DIN unit should choose the Pioneer AVH-3300BT for stunning visuals and logical menus. The Philips has DAB and easy playback.
