You can take over the controls of an Audi R8 for a fraction of the price this Christmas with the latest Revell radio-control car. We’ve been trying the 1:16-scale coupe for size.

Annoyingly, the £110 price doesn’t include the eight AA batteries for the hand remote, although there is a battery pack for the car, as well as a mains charger.

The R8’s plastic bodyshell isn’t the most detailed we’ve ever seen and the stickers look cheap, but it’s durable.

Pulling out the security pins reveals the chassis – which has four-wheel drive and independent suspension.

Our only concern is that the power switch is on top of the chassis, so to turn the car on and off you have to unpin the shell. We’d prefer to see it mounted underneath.

On the go, the R8 is lots of fun. It’s fast enough for large living rooms and flat driveways and is great at cornering, if a little twitchy. It’s ideal for novices looking for a bit of a challenge, and the £110 price reflects this.

Rating: ★★★
What is it?
A step up from toy-grade Radio controls, with a detailed chassis and excellent adjustable ride height.
Problems?
Needs lots of batteries, the on/off switch could be placed more logically, twitchy handling.
Why buy?
Fast, durable plastic bodyshell, good controller, 4WD.
