Toolboxes

We lift the lid on 12 top-selling toolboxes to see which is the best bet for keeping all your car DIY kit in good order

Toolboxes

February 2005

A Good toolbox is an essential for any car DIY enthusiast. Tools that come in their own case with a slot for every piece look great, but as soon as you buy an additional socket, screwdriver or bit, they immediately become too small. Before long, you'll have lost that extra kit.

As with most things, size does matter, but biggest is not always best. Obviously if you are planning to transfer all your tools to the box, you'll need one that can accommodate them with room to spare for extra kit you may buy in the future. However, take care that you don't end up with a box so big you can't lift it, as this will be a pain if you need to carry it to your car. Around 50 centimetres long is about the right size to suit most needs.

Toolboxes made from plastic have really improved in recent years, and for us, they are now a better option than metal versions. They are generally as tough as steel, but aren't as heavy and won't rust. Inside, look for organiser trays, especially if they are removable, as they make it easy to separate smaller odds and ends, such as fuses or electrical connectors. If there are boxes in the lid for these easy-to-lose pieces, then check they can't slide out or open accidentally.

A removable tote tray which sits over the main compartment can be handy for taking tools to a job, although these can take up storage space.

Verdict

Advances in plastic production methods have given us a cracking set of tough, lightweight tool boxes. Top of the podium is the Stanley 1-92-066 from Halfords, which offered a good size with plenty of features for a low price.

Curver's XL 02935 had a huge capacity, but this could work against it in tight situations, so it takes second. Draper's TB500 gave the Stanley a good run for its money, but fell at the price hurdle.
