Multitools

If you want a versatile bit of kit that can turn its hand to many motoring tasks, a multitool is for you. We pick the best from 10

July 2005

Getting tooled up has never been easier since the penknife grew into the multitool. Slip one in the glovebox, door pocket or even briefcase, and you will have a head start on any roadside repair. It will not help you strip an engine, but for an emergency fix this tool is hard to beat.

The original Seventies' Leatherman has been copied countless times, but the leading products are still based around a set of fold-away pliers. So which is the best combination of cutters, saws, knives and screwdrivers? We test the top tools to find out.

Verdict

It is the original, and still the best. The Leatherman Blast combines a sensible price with great all-round performance, and would make a perfect addition to your glovebox.

The stylish Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit was close behind in the runner-up position, but ultimately lost out after snagging on the wire in our cutting test.

Third place goes to the Leatherman Ti. This titanium multitool performed solidly in all our tests, but the high price means it does not offer the best value for money.
