Soldering Tools: Electric

If you're adding kit to your car, a soldering tool is a handy ally. But which one can you rely on in the heat of battle?

July 2005

Accessory shop shelves are groaning under the weight of all the electronic gadgets and gizmos now available for your motor. Satellite-navigation, speed trap detectors, mobile phone hands-free kits, reversing aids, video screens and the like are fast becoming in-car must-haves - and you can save a small fortune by fitting them yourself.

To get a professional finish when installing such kit - and achieve secure, moisture-free connections - you need a soldering tool. There is a choice of guns, which heat up quickly, or irons, which can happily be left to run all day.

Our test looked at both types, and we divided our tools into those powered by lighter gas, and those that run off the mains or 12V cigar lighter. So which is the best of our eight top products?

Verdict

Combining a good price with impressive versatility, the Rejel torch was our favourite gas tool. If you're on a budget, the less powerful but still flexible Laser 3410 is the one to look out for.
When it comes to electric soldering tools, the cheap and effective Draper 71418 is ideal. Those who want more kit, and are prepared to spend the extra, should go for the comprehensive Screwfix 12031.
