Cycle Carriers - Roof

We put the latest cycle carriers on the rack in the search for the best combination of car and bike

Cycle carriers - Roof

May 2006

Bikes are great for getting out and about and exercise, but they are a pain to carry in a car. Even if you can negotiate pedals, wheels and bars into your boot or hatch, there's still the problem of grubby tyres and oily chains.

A cycle rack is the solution, and there are three types of mounting: roof, rear or tow bar. Roof versions are secure, but attaching the bike can be awkward, and bars cost extra.

Rear-mounted racks are easy to remove and store, yet can be hard to secure, while tow bar versions are sturdy, but take time to remove and, of course, require a hitch. You also need a light and number plate board if those on the car are obscured.

Verdict

The brilliant Paddy Hopkirk Quick Ball is the best tow bar cycle rack. Its unique design and compact size saw it come out on top.

In the rear mounting sector, the Pendle offering gets the nod. Although it's expensive, this product has a quality feel and superb quick-release fixings. The cheap Fapa Velo is our fav-ourite roof carrier - no thanks to its instructions!
