Roof Bars - Gutter Fit

If you want to put skis, bicycles or even just a roofbox on top of your car, buying a set of decent roof bars is the all-important first step. We tested 12 of the best - six for rain gutter fitments and six to attach to rails - to find the best and simplest way to carry gear on the roof.

Essentially the difference is that the gutter-fit designs sit on the roof with clamps in the door openings, while the latter bolt on to factory-fit rails, as seen on estate cars and people carriers for example.

While these are the most popular mountings, fixed-point systems are gaining in popularity, as they provide virtually foolproof installation via threaded holes in the roof. However, this test concentrates on the gutter-fit and rail bars.

Verdict

Thule's 862 is the best gutter-fit design, as it can be ready to use in five minutes, while Automaxi's pre-assembled Supra 02 comes second as it's also quick to secure. Atera's Signo and the Thule 761 were close rivals for the rail win, but the former took it due to a lower price. While it's slightly fiddly to set up, fitting and removing the 761 is easy.
