Another stylish choice for small car buyers is the Renault Clio. It’s sold as a five-door only, but looks like a three-door thanks to the hidden rear door handles.
Buyers can choose from a massive range of specs, and all versions get keyless entry and keyless go, as well as a seven-inch touchscreen (with clever R-Link connectivity on Dynamique models upwards). Safety kit is as good as you’d expect from a Renault, too, with ESP and emergency brake assist helping the car achieve five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests. Parking sensors and a reversing camera can be added as options, and there’s huge scope to personalise the bodywork and interior with different colours and trims.
Engine choices include a punchy new 900cc petrol turbo, which is lighter than the diesel engines and makes the car feel more agile. Add the £250 ECO pack, and this promises low fuel consumption of 65.7mpg, plus road tax-free 99g/km emissions. That can’t match the cleanest diesel, though; this delivers 88.3mpg and 83g/km.
Whichever you go for, slightly larger dimensions mean the Clio has a bigger boot than before, at 300 litres, and provides more space for driver and passengers.
