Skoda Octavia 2013

Successive generations of the Skoda Octavia have taught the traditional superpowers of the family car world how it’s done – and the latest model is no exception. It offers the space of a large family car for the cost of a compact model, just like its predecessors, but adds smart looks and a classy cabin to the mix.

A 590-litre boot and generous rear legroom take care of family matters and even basic S models feature luxuries like alloy wheels, a DAB radio, Bluetooth and leather steering wheel. It comes as no surprise when you learn the Skoda is closely related to the brilliant new Volkswagen Golf, but is it as good as the VW?

With assured handling, a range of excellent turbocharged petrol and diesel engines (the 1.6 TDI promises CO2 emissions of 99g/km) and more kit for your cash, almost, but the Octavia isn’t as good to drive and doesn’t match the Golf for ultimate refinement and comfort. Still, its extra space and specification make it a superior buy for families with teens to ferry around.

The Skoda Octavia Estate comes at a small premium over the standard model, and boasts even better practicality. It's so good it picked up Best Estate at the 2013 Auto Express New Car Awards. And owners ranked it the sixth most satisfying car in the UK to own in our Driver Power survey.
